| About Your Program |
Once you’ve arrived in England, you’ll be taken to a hotel in London where
you’ll attend SIIP’s orientation. You’ll be acclimatized – and you’ll have seen
London – before you move to the South Coast.
When you get to our partner institution, the University of Portsmouth, you will
have your own room in a residence hall, and a meal plan that provides 19 meals
per week. Your neighbors will be students from all over the UK and around the
world.
The university is home to 19,000 students, and so it boasts a substantial
curriculum, so you’ll be able to make progress towards your degree while
studying overseas.
On some weekends, you’ll have the opportunity to take SIIP Cultural Tours,
which from Portsmouth can include tours to Stonehenge, Paris, Rome and Dublin.
For the remaining weekends, you’ll have plenty of options. For nightlife, you
might stay in Portsmouth or take the train to London, which is just over an
hour away. If you fancy a quiet weekend, you might visit the Isle of Wight or
the New Forest. And if you enjoy budget air travel, you’re close enough to
Southampton airport to take flights all over Europe.

About Portsmouth
|
Portsmouth is located on the South Coast
of England. Portsmouth is England's only island city and is surrounded by the
sea. With a population of 189,000, it is a good compromise between the big city
of London and rural England. The heart of Portsmouth can be found at the Royal
Naval Base, the home of the British Navy, which is within walking distance of
the university. The Naval Base houses the famous battleship HMS Victory. On the
Victory, you can see the place on where Admiral Nelson was mortally wounded,
and the bed where he died. Nearby, you can view the progress of restoration
work on HMS Mary Rose, which was sunk by a French fleet in 1545 and raised from
the Solent in 1982.
One of the newest features in Portsmouth is the spectacular 557 foot Spinnaker
Tower with its observation platform. On a fine day, you can look out towards
nearby Southampton and imagine the scene as the unsinkable Titanic sailed from
there in 1912 on its ill-fated journey to America. There are plenty of other
things to do, including taking a day-trip to Ryde on the Isle of Wight ferry
and visiting Osbourne House, where Queen Victoria spent many summers. And, of
course, you can visit all the attractions of London, which is only just over an
hour away by train.

Weather
Portsmouth is one of England’s
sunniest places. Its average high temperature varies from 46F in January to 72F
in July. The average rainfall is 22 inches per year. It occasionally snows, but
snow rarely accumulates. For comparison, San Francisco’s average high varies
form 53F to 73F, and its average rainfall is 20 inches.
|
Religious Services
Portsmouth houses Protestant,
Catholic and Mormon churches, a synagogue and a mosque. The University
chaplaincy employs Anglican and Free Church clergy; the University also
contains an Islamic prayer room.
|
Health and Safety
In a national survey, Portsmouth
students rated their environment as the second safest in the UK. The murder
rate in England is very small compared with the murder rate in the US, but the
risk of petty theft is higher.
